Soldiers swap out patches, guidons as 529th CSSB transitions to 529th DSSB
The 529th, which previously wore the patch of the Virginia Beach-based 329th Regional Support Group, will now fall under the North Carolina National Guard’s 29th Division Sustainment Brigade and, as a result, don the patch of the Fort Belvoir-based 29th Infantry Division.
Brig. Gen. Dennis Rohler and Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Hawley, the Virginia Army National Guard command team, and Col. Kimberly Graham and Command Sgt. Maj. Stacy Garner, the 29th Division Sustainment Brigade command team, were among those on hand for the ceremony.
As part of the redesignation, the Maryland National Guard’s 729th Quartermaster Company now falls under the command of the 529th and becomes Alpha and Bravo Companies, 529th DSSB. In addition, the Virginia Beach-based 1173rd Composite Truck Company becomes Charlie Company, 529th DSSB. Headquarters Company is the fourth company in the battalion.
The Blackstone-based 3647th Maintenance Company, which previously fell under the command of the 529th CSSB, has been redesignated as Alpha Company, 29th Division Special Troops Battalion.
As the battalion stood in formation, Lt. Col. Eddie Bailey, the 529th commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. David Elliot, the 529th senior enlisted leader, moved from company to company, overseeing the changing of each company’s guidon. Then Graham and Garner removed the 329th ID patches from Bailey and Elliott’s left shoulders and replaced them with the 29th ID patch. Bailey and Elliott then removed and affixed the patches to each company commander and first sergeant before Soldiers in each unit removed their patches and replaced them with their new ones.
“As we officially transform to the 529th Division Sustainment Support Battalion, we do far more than change unit guidons,” Bailey said. “Your legacy as a CSSB is written in blood, sweat, and the relentless drive of every Soldier standing here today. But the modern battlefield has evolved.
“Wear the new blue and grey of the 29th Infantry Division patch proudly as we build on the proud heritage of the 529th CSSB and set the standard for what a DSSB can achieve.”
Since being federally recognized in 2009, the 529th CSSB has completed four active-duty deployments overseas. In addition to mobilizations to Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait, the 529th most recently deployed to Poland in 2024.
The North Carolina National Guard’s 113th Sustainment Brigade was redesignated the 29th Division Sustainment Brigade during a ceremony July 12, 2026, in McLeansville, N.C.
The 729th Quartermaster Company traces its lineage to 1880 and entered federal service during the Spanish–American War and World War I, where it became part of Company B, 115th Infantry, 29th Division. The unit went on to fight with distinction in World War II, earning the Presidential Unit Citation for heroism at St. Laurent sur Mer during the Normandy landings and the French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star for gallantry at St. Lo. It consolidated with Company D, 729th Maintenance Battalion in 1968, later becoming part of the 58th Support Battalion and eventually the 729th Support Battalion. In 2006, it was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 729th Support Battalion, then became the 729th Support Company in 2009.
In 2016, the unit was converted and redesignated as the 729th Quartermaster Company and was activated for federal service in 2019–2020, deploying Soldiers to Poland and the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
The 1173rd Composite Truck Company was originally based in Martinsville before relocating to Virginia Beach in 2007. The unit, which specializes in the movement of cargo, munitions, and critical supplies, employs a fleet of tactical vehicles to sustain both state and federal missions. Over the past two decades, the 1173rd has supported a number of domestic emergency responses missions and has executed strategic military logistics missions abroad, most notably during Operation Patriot Press in 2023.
The 3647th Maintenance Company specializes in tactical maintenance, wheeled vehicle recovery, and equipment repair. The unit earned both the Army Unit Commendation and the Navy Unit Commendation for its contributions to Operation Iraqi Freedom II and Operation Enduring Freedom from 2004 to 2005. The 3647th’s history recovery operations during Hurricane Irene in 2011, support to major training exercises at Fort Drum, New York, a deployment to Germany in 2023 in support of the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, and the certification of its Soldiers for specialized domestic disaster response under the 34th CERFP in 2026.
